Welcome to the Syracuse Information Systems Evaluation Project (SISE) and the Central New York Secure Business Initiative (CNY-SBI), directed by Jeffrey M. Stanton, Ph.D.. The SISE project and the CNY-SBI bring a "sociotechnical" perspective to the uses of information technology within organizations.

Take a look at What's New in our web.

Information technology pervades every aspect of organizational functioning. The SISE project applies the theories and research of both social and information sciences to improve information security practices and information technology usage in organizations. The goal of the SISE Project is to understand the impacts of these technologies and use this insight to promote improvements to information security, privacy, and business continuity while protecting the rights of employees, customers, and the general public. The SISE project focuses on small and medium sized organizations, including businesses, not-for-profit organizations, government, and social service agencies.  Our overriding goals are to help organizations improve organizational effectiveness and the quality of work life for organizational members. We try to achieve these goals by making sure that information security works for people rather than the other way around.

SISE/CNY-SBI has been funded by the National Science Foundation, the SIOP Foundation, and by SUPRIA funding from the CASE Center (funded by NYSTAR). SISE/CNY-SBI is a CASE Center partner and a member of the Systems Assurance Institute at Syracuse University.

What's New

Our new book, The Visible Employee, based on four years of SISE research, is now available for order on Amazon. The book provides a research based prescription for improving information security by working with employees to increase security accountability. Make sure to check our website for supplemental materials, podcasts, and blogs by the authors.

At the end of 2004, the SISE team received another National Science Foundation grant, this time from the Information Technology Workforce program. This project, which we call "Culture Clash" seeks to understand the professional culture of information technology and information security functions within organizations with the goal of improving the participation of women and minorities in technical professions. You can review the details at our project website.

The SISE project team is pleased to have received a SUPRIA award from the CASE Center (funded by NYSTAR) to pursue the Central New York Secure Business Initiative. A one page project blurb in PDF format (suitable for printing) described the project. This funding allowed us to assist 10 area organizations from April 2004-August 2004. More details are available on the projects page.  This project was recently profiled by the Syracuse Post-Standard.
